Old Age - Fall Risk Prevention Basics

24 May 2024

Our seniors require to be comfortable and need to feel at ease and safe. For them, their homes are their haven and even though they are happy and satisfied, their homes can be filled with nooks and corners that can increase the risk of falls or accidents, especially if they are living alone.

For senior care, whether they are staying alone or with extended family, there are times when unexpected falls can cause injury. It is also one of the major reasons for decline in health of our elders. Decreasing the hazards and making some precautionary changes is always a good idea in encouraging their independence and safety.

Our homes are divided into 4 main areas, our common area, bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen.

Common Area – Mostly includes our stairways, corridors, and sitting and dining room

  • Keep it clean and clear – Stairways and corridors are disastrous places where clutter or the occasional bag or shoe ends up flopping at.

  • Brightly Lit - Adequate lighting in all rooms, including doorway, stairways, and corridors are helping in preventing the risk of falls and can be easily installed by either using two-way switches or automatic motion detecting lights.

  • No Wibble-Wobble – Making sure that the furniture that they use is in tiptop shape is a good way of preventing falls/injuries.

  • There should be emergency information placed at such a location that it is easily accessible.

Bathroom

  • Grab bars and support bars are essential additions to the sides of the toilet seat and shower area.

  • Non-skid mats or installing non-skid tiles in the shower area.

  • If your seniors are over 75, then advising them on not locking the bathroom door is also a good idea to easily reach them in case of emergencies.

Kitchen

  • Placing commonly and frequently used items on the counter or within easy reach.

  • Maintenance of the electrical sockets and switches, especially those that are connected to the appliances is mandatory and should properly fit the socket.

  • Check the expiry date of food items.

Bedroom

  • A bedside lamp.

  • A bedrail is a good safety measure to prevent fall risk while they sleep.

Medication

  • Medicine boxes or pill boxes help avoid missed or double dosages.

  • Check the expiry date of medications.
